How will Juan Mata influence football facility design?
Juan Mata has joined sports venue design and architecture firm Populous as a Special Adviser on Football and Training. The former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder will provide athlete-led strategic insights to develop elite training environments and football centers, according to Populous.

Mata, who finished the 2026 season playing for Melbourne Victory, will collaborate with Populous design teams on strategic discussions and design reviews. He has played in nearly 200 matches at venues designed by Populous, including the FNB Stadium during the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Wembley Stadium.

“The best environments help players perform, recover, learn, connect and grow. Every detail influences the daily experience of athletes and staff,” Mata said. “Populous understands that. Their approach puts performance and people at the centre of design, and I’m excited to contribute my experiences to help shape the next generation of football training centres.”
Populous has delivered over 250 training facilities worldwide. Current projects include the development of training centers for Birmingham City and Real Deportivo La Coruña.
“Juan has experienced elite football at every level of the game. He understands first-hand what makes a training environment successful, from innovation across player performance and recovery to culture, wellbeing and development,” said Declan Sharkey, Global Director at Populous.
Why is BuzzBallz giving away 21,866 drinks?
Ready-to-drink brand BuzzBallz has launched a social media competition giving away 21,866 free drinks. The specific number of drinks corresponds to the number of days elapsed since the England men’s national team last won a major trophy in 1966, according to the company.
The campaign, titled “Show Us Your (Buzz)Ballz,” is led by former manager Harry Redknapp. UK fans aged 18 and over can enter by uploading photos or videos of BuzzBallz products in creative settings using the hashtag #ShowUsYourBuzzBallz. Selected winners will receive a crate of drinks every two months for one year.
The promotion follows research conducted among 1,000 England fans. The data found that 43% of supporters believe the game is now overanalysed, while 29% believe football has become too commercial.
“Tournament football should be about mates, memories and having a laugh. Everyone gets so wrapped up in the pressure and expectation now, but some of the best football moments come when fans are just enjoying themselves,” Redknapp said.
