The Coast Guard has donated a large 3,000-ton decommissioned patrol vessel to Ecuador free of charge.

The Coast Guard announced on the 25th that it had signed an agreement with Ecuadorian Defense Minister Giancarlo Loffredo for the transfer of Coast Guard patrol boat 3001.

Vessel 3001, which the Coast Guard is transferring to Ecuador, is the first 3,000-ton patrol vessel in Coast Guard history. This patrol vessel, 105 meters long, 15 meters wide and 38 meters high, was first assigned to the Busan Coast Guard in 1994 and was decommissioned last March, 30 years later.

Ecuador will spend 4.5 billion won to keep the ship at the Mokpo shipyard for six months. The Coast Guard plans to provide training to Ecuadorian operators, including vessel handling techniques. Once maintenance is complete, it will sail on its own to Ecuador. Ship 3001 will serve as the flagship for the commander of the Ecuadorian Navy.

Kim Jong-wook, commissioner general of the Korean Coast Guard, said: “The 3001, which will be transferred to Ecuador, is a symbolic vessel as it will be the Coast Guard’s first 3,000-ton vessel.” in the waters surrounding the Galapagos of Ecuador, a world natural heritage, and will act as a sentinel to protect the marine environment,” he said.

Previously, in 2020, the Coast Guard transferred two 300-ton vessels to Ecuador.
