OSA, when untreated, can lead to serious health issues, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and cognitive problems. A 2022 study highlighted that many OSA cases go undiagnosed due to poor healthcare coordination and misconceptions about the severity of symptoms.
Previous research shows that OSA is related to higher rates of gum disease, tooth wear, mouth pain, and dry mouth. The review stated that edentulism is associated with other health problems like gum disease and oral cancer. Losing teeth can cause changes in the shape and function of the upper airway, leading to airway collapse, a common factor in OSA.
The authors examined scientific literature to clarify the relationship between edentulism and OSA. They reviewed 23 studies from 1999 to 2023, including six randomized controlled trials. All studies agreed that tooth loss is linked to a higher risk of OSA, with apnea-hypopnea indices 2 to 3 times greater in edentulous individuals compared to those with teeth. However, the authors noted there is a need for more studies to directly compare these groups.
The impact of dentures on OSA risk remains uncertain. Some studies suggest they can either increase or decrease OSA risk. However, a more recent study found that implant-supported dentures may improve airway space and symptoms in those with mild to moderate OSA.
The authors concluded there is a probable link between tooth loss and OSA, highlighting the need for better dental care and prevention strategies. They emphasized that current clinical data are limited and varied, urging further research for clearer conclusions.
