Education Minister Lee Joo-ho Urges Medical School Presidents to Address Quota and Tuition Changes by April: Meeting Highlights and Updates

Education Minister Lee Joo-ho held a video conference with the presidents of universities operating medical schools and asked: “Please complete the review of school regulations regarding medical school quotas and changes to the tuition plan implementation of university admissions by the end of April. “

According to the Ministry of Education, on the 24th, Minister Lee held a video conference with the presidents of 40 universities with medical schools at the Korea Educational Facility Safety Institute in Yeouido, Seoul.

Minister Lee said: “It is a difficult time, but I ask university presidents to demonstrate excellent leadership on the ground,” and added: “Please do your best to overcome this challenge.”

This meeting was held for the first time on the 19th after the government accepted the recommendation of the presidents of six national universities to allow each university to flexibly increase the number of students between 50 and 100% of the increase per the college 2025 admissions process.

Deputy Prime Minister Lee said: “This takes into account that the medical school curriculum is being managed in a disruptive manner due to the postponement of the start of the semester and refusal to attend classes, and that many applicants and parents are feeling confusion and anxiety because the university admission process has not been confirmed even though the 2025 entrance exam is just around the corner “He explained the background of the government’s decision.”

Furthermore, he told the medical students: “If the refusal of classes and absences continue, you will be the ones who will suffer the most” and “I hope that you will quickly return to your original position and continue your studies, which is your original duty and express the necessary opinions.

Regarding the request to investigate the forced refusal to attend classes by the group of medical school students, he said: “It is very shocking that illegal acts take place in a school where the value of freedom should be respected” and “Violation of the right to liberty” the study should never be tolerated and similar cases “The government will act strictly in accordance with the laws and principles,” he said.
