An EF0 tornado touched down late Friday night, traversing nearly eight miles from northern Johnson County, Kansas, into Kansas City, Missouri, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill. The tornado, which developed within a line of severe thunderstorms, carried estimated peak winds of 75 mph.

The NWS confirmed the tornado’s path began at March 6th at 23:34 CT near Lake Quivira in Shawnee, Kansas. The tornado dissipated near Westport, around Southwest Trafficway, at approximately 23:45 CT.

The path length was recorded at 7.87 miles, with a maximum width of 50 yards. Damage was primarily limited to trees, and no injuries have been reported. The NWS emphasized that this information is preliminary and subject to change pending a final review and publication in NWS Storm Data.

The event occurred amidst a period of unsettled weather across the region. The NWS forecast for Johnson County indicates a quiet weekend is expected, but a chance of storms returns on Tuesday. Sunday is forecast to be sunny with highs reaching the upper 60s Fahrenheit (around 20 Celsius), with southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph and gusts up to 25 mph. Sunday night will remain clear, with lows in the upper 40s Fahrenheit (around 9 Celsius) and continued southwest winds.

Monday is expected to be another sunny day, with highs in the mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 24 Celsius). However, conditions are expected to deteriorate on Tuesday, with partly sunny skies giving way to mostly cloudy conditions and a likely chance of rain and thunderstorms. Highs are forecast to be around 80 Fahrenheit (27 Celsius), with a 60 percent chance of precipitation. Tuesday night brings a near 100 percent chance of thunderstorms and rain, with a significant temperature drop and lows around 40 Fahrenheit (4 Celsius).

The forecast extends into mid-week, with Wednesday expected to be mostly cloudy with a chance of rain in the morning, becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon. Highs will be much cooler, in the lower 50s Fahrenheit (around 10 Celsius). Wednesday night and Thursday are predicted to be mostly clear, with lows in the lower 30s Fahrenheit (around 0 Celsius) and highs in the upper 50s Fahrenheit (around 15 Celsius). Conditions are expected to remain unsettled through the end of the week, with mostly cloudy skies on Friday and Saturday, and lows in the upper 30s Fahrenheit (around 4 Celsius) and highs in the mid-50s Fahrenheit (around 13 Celsius).

Current conditions at Kansas City Downtown Airport (KMKC) as of Saturday, March 7th evening are fair, with a temperature of 42 Fahrenheit (6 Celsius), 79 percent humidity, and calm winds. The office also supports regional weather monitoring and provides data for various applications, including aviation, marine activities, and river and lake levels. The NWS emphasizes preparedness for severe weather events and encourages residents to stay informed through official channels.

The recent tornado event highlights the potential for severe weather in the region, even during periods of relatively mild temperatures.
