Egypt aims to expand its total cultivated area to 12.5 million feddans, scale annual domestic car production past 100,000 vehicles, and push local automotive manufacturing content to 60%. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced the targets during a speech at the Egypt Forum 2026, outlining the government’s upcoming economic and infrastructure goals, dailynewsegypt.com reported.
Expanding Farmland and Food Security Targets
The government is working to raise wheat self-sufficiency from 43% to more than 60% while expanding grain-storage capacity beyond 6 million tonnes within two years, up from more than 4 million tonnes. Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk said state-led agricultural projects have boosted national food security and increased crop, livestock, poultry, and fisheries production, according to mena.org.eg.
Egypt’s agricultural land has expanded to 10.5 million feddans from 9 million feddans in 2014 through reclamation efforts using modern irrigation and smart farming technologies. Farouk noted that vertical expansion initiatives raised the total crop area to 17.5 million feddans compared to 15 million feddans in 2014, while wheat yields climbed from 14 to 20 ardebs.

Boosting Industrial Output and Automotive Manufacturing
The Suez Canal Economic Zone has attracted over $10bn in investment and generated more than 200,000 jobs, with international manufacturers such as Haier, Midea, and Beko expanding their local presence.
In the automotive sector, the government is targeting 60% local content and annual production exceeding 100,000 vehicles over the next two to three years. The strategy aims to develop domestic supply chains, cut reliance on imported components, and position the nation as a regional manufacturing hub.
Implementing the National Economic Transformation Programme
The prime minister’s remarks precede the implementation of the National Economic Transformation Programme for 2027–2030, dailynewsegypt.com reported. That framework targets economic growth of 6.8%, an inflation rate of 7%, and an unemployment rate of 5.5% by the end of fiscal year 2029/30.
The programme encompasses 185 key measures divided across five priority sectors: agriculture, manufacturing, information and communications technology, tourism, and energy. Digital exports are slated to grow from $5.2bn to nearly $12bn by 2030 under the plan.
Upgrading Infrastructure and Renewable Energy Networks
Infrastructure developments include a 2,250-kilometre high-speed electric rail network designed to connect major cities, industrial zones, ports, and tourist destinations. Electricity generation capacity has reached approximately 64,000 megawatts, with renewable energy projected to supply more than 45% of the electricity mix by the end of 2028, dailynewsegypt.com reported.
Water infrastructure targets include expanding desalination capacity from 1.5 million cubic metres per day to 2 million cubic metres in the near term, and reaching 10 million cubic metres per day over the longer term. Rural sanitation coverage has climbed to approximately 60%, up from 12% in 2014.
