El Salvador’s Bitcoin Adoption Program Fails to Gain Traction

El Salvador’s ambitious “Bitcoin Adoption” program, designed to attract cryptocurrency investors, has yet to show significant results. Despite its promise to provide “passports of freedom” to Bitcoin investors who donate million in Bitcoin or Tether, the initiative has failed to gain traction.

A recent investigation by El Mundo, a Salvadoran news outlet, revealed that not a single passport has been issued under the program. The initiative aims to attract 1,000 investors and raise $1 billion to support El Salvador’s economy. This lack of progress contradicts claims on social media that the applications were successful.

The immigration office responsible for issuing these passports has confirmed that no documents have been issued through this program. While some reports suggest that at least two families have been issued passports through the fast-track process, there is no official data to verify these claims. This raises questions about the actual impact of the program.

Despite initial enthusiasm and assurances from government advisers, the lack of progress with the program suggests El Salvador may struggle to attract the scale of Bitcoin investors it had hoped for. The program’s failure to gain traction may be a setback for the country’s efforts to establish itself as a cryptocurrency-friendly haven.

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has shown his commitment to cryptocurrency, donating two bitcoins to build a school in Honduras as a notable show of goodwill and regional solidarity. However, the success of the “Bitcoin Adoption” program is crucial to the country’s economic growth and development.
