Elder Theater Veteran, Nam Myeong-ryeol, Condemns Younger Actor Son Seok-gu’s Arrogance in Fiery Exchange

Elder Theater Industry Figure Criticizes Young Actor Son Seok-gu for Arrogance

In a recent development in the theater industry, esteemed elder actor Nam Myeong-ryeol has publicly criticized his younger counterpart, Son Seok-gu, for his perceived arrogance. The criticism stems from comments made by Son at a press conference for the drama ‘Army on the Tree’ held at LG Seoul Art Center last month.

“I’ve always wanted to focus on theater, so I never once considered venturing into the world of media. But eventually, circumstances led me to transition to film and drama,” Son stated during the conference on June 27th. “Back then, the directors I worked with would insist on adding a microphone even when I performed on stage. It baffled me why they would ask for such fake acting. That’s why I honestly quit.”

During the conference, reporters questioned Son about his use of a microphone for the ‘Army on the Tree’ stage performance, which had only about 350 seats in a small theater. His response added fuel to the fire.

Actor Nam Myeong-ryeol, who felt compelled to share his perspective on the matter, took to Facebook and linked a related article in which he criticized Son’s attitude. “Hahaha, the audacity is laughable,” he wrote. “Let me emphasize that I am neither rich nor poor.”

In the comments section, Nam continued to express his discontent, stating, “While genuine whispering may be my preference, I have to consider projecting my voice for the audience seated in the 350-seat venue.”

He further added, “There are numerous actors who can fill a theater with 350 seats, even with a mere whisper. If all acting is about portraying fictional characters, it becomes absurd to define what qualifies as ‘real’ acting.”

Following a significant amount of attention garnered by his Facebook post, Nam decided to delete the article himself. Nevertheless, he later reposted, disregarding critics who deemed his views as outdated. “This conversation delves into the essence of theater that transcends time, be it in Shakespearean era, the present, or the future,” he concluded.

Actor Nam Myeong-ryeol, an elder in the theater industry, criticized his younger actor, Son Seok-gu, for being arrogant.

It was a criticism of actor Son Seok-gu’s comments that he called ‘fake acting’ at a press conference for the drama ‘Army on the Tree’ at LG Seoul Art Center last month.

Let’s listen to what actor Son said at the time.

At the time, when reporters asked why he was using a microphone when the ‘Army on the Tree’ stage was a small theater with about 350 seats, he answered this way.

Regarding this, actor Nam Myung-ryeol linked a related article on Facebook today and wrote, “Hahaha, he laughs. What is that arrogance. I just add that I am not a rich person, a rich person, or a poor person.”

Then, in the comments, he said, “Although I whispered with real acting, I will have to think about acting that can be heard by the 350 seat audience.”

He also criticized, “There are several actors who fill 350 seats with a voice even if they whisper. If all the acting is to play a fictional character, it is absurd to define what real acting is.”

Actor Nam deleted this article himself after receiving a lot of attention.

After that, he posted again, “Some criticize the words of an old man who is out of step with the times. However, it is a story about the essence that will continue in Shakespeare’s time, now, and in the future. You! “
