Electricity Market Concerns: New Campaign Highlights Risks
Energy Minister simon Watts: Market Review underway, Key Announcements expected Soon
Wellington, NZ – New Zealand’s Minister for Energy, Simon Watts, has confirmed that a extensive review of the country’s electricity market performance is currently in progress, with meaningful announcements anticipated “in due course.” Speaking to 1News, Watts emphasized that his primary focus is on ensuring the security and affordability of the nation’s energy supply for all new Zealanders.
Watts acknowledged the dual challenges facing the energy sector: an ongoing energy shortage, exacerbated by low wind generation and a faster-than-anticipated decline in gas production, alongside an electricity market that is “not functioning as well as it should.”
“New Zealanders need to have confidence that the electricity market is doing its part to deliver on the long-term interests of kiwis, and that there is enough competition to deliver the affordable prices we need,” Watts stated. The Government initiated the market performance review last year. This in-depth examination aims to identify areas for enhancement, with the ultimate goal of fostering economic growth and ensuring the accessibility of reliable and affordable electricity for households and businesses across the country.
While specific details of the review’s findings and proposed actions remain under wraps,Minister Watts assured the public that the Government will be making announcements regarding this critical work in the near future.
