Zane Maroney to Join Abt Formula E Team in 2024/25
Formula 2 race winner Zane Maroney will join the Abt Formula E team ahead of the 2024/25 season and make his Formula E debut later this year.
Twenty-year-old Zane Maroney will compete in his first Formula E race at the Sao Paulo E-Prix on December 7. Before that, pre-season testing will begin in Valencia from November 4-7.
Mallory also became Sauber’s F1 reserve driver this year, making him the first Barbadian to take part in a Formula E race. He has also been Andretti’s test and reserve driver for the past two seasons.
In the meantime, Mallory has taken part in several rookie test sessions, including in Berlin, Rome and Misano, and has already tested the new Gen3 Evo bike and the first engine developed by Lola and the new collaboration between Yamaha.
“I’m looking forward to this challenge. It’s a great opportunity to join this team as Abt, Laura and Yamaha embark on a new journey,” said Zane Maroney.
“Being hired by such an exceptional group of people is a huge step forward in my career.”
“Right now I have no idea how far I can go. I don’t feel any pressure, I’m just trying to get better every day.”
Zane Maroney is currently third in the F2 standings with Rodan Motorsport after winning both the sprint race and the main race at the opening round in Bahrain, but his Formula E involvement means he will miss the final two rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Zane Maroney replaced Nico Muller at Abt as he moved to Andretti, and was paired with Formula E regular Lucas di Grassi.
“We can’t wait to welcome Zayn to the team for season 11. He’s only been with us a short time, but he’s already brought a breath of fresh air to the team,” added Thomas Biermeier, CEO of Abt.
“Providing opportunities and supporting young talent has been a decades-long tradition at ABT, so it was obvious that we would follow the same path with Formula E.”
This season will be the first of the new partnership between Abt, Lola and Yamaha. Di Grassi said he was “very positively surprised” by the progress the team has made so far.
Maroney admits that the opportunity to work with a prestigious brand from the beginning was a stimulus to accept the project.
“I look at it as an opportunity and obviously I’m excited,” Maroney said.
“If I was 35, I would probably think a little differently, but I am still young and ready to take on this challenge of developing a team with great engineers and Lucas, who has a lot of experience can also learn from
“I’m really looking forward to it. I don’t know where we’ll be, but I’m optimistic and I know everyone in the team is very motivated to aim for the front row on the grid.”
“I don’t know how fast they are, but I know that me and the team are doing our best for this season.”
With Wednesday’s announcement, Maroney becomes the only driver never to have competed in Formula E.
ERT is the only team yet to finalise its driver lineup, having fielded Dan Ticktum and Sergio Sette Camara last season.
