Elephant | Why can’t an elephant jump? This is what the study says

Elephants are considered to be the strongest animals in the wild. While the lion is definitely the king of the jungle, elephants’ physique scares almost every other animal. Elephants have excellent sense of smell and lead complex social lives. They rarely get cancer. But did you know that elephants can’t jump?

Although many studies have been done on elephants, no one has been able to find the exact reason why they cannot jump. According to a Live Science report, elephants cannot jump because of their anatomy.

Professor John Hutchinson of the Royal Veterinary College in London says the muscles in elephants’ feet are very weak and their ankles are not as flexible as other animals. Also, they are very heavy. All these reasons make it impossible for them to jump.

“Jumping animals need flexible ankles, really strong Achilles tendons and calf muscles. Elephants have really tight muscles and not very flexible ankles. “This is also the reason why elephants move so slowly,” John Hutchinson told Live Science.

The study also shows that elephants cannot go faster than 15 mph (about 24 kilometers per hour). John Hutchinson also argued that elephants should not jump. He said that people believe that if the animal is small and flexible, it can easily jump and save its own life. The big body of elephants is enough to save their lives and they don’t need to jump. “Being a large creature is itself a defense,” said John Hutchinson.

It is difficult to say why elephants do not jump. John added that scientists still haven’t proven why. “Maybe the elephants decided not to jump. They will be embarrassed by it,” said John Hutchinson.
