Actress Ella Koon’s Family Feud: Hong Kong Court Invalidates Contested Will

29 January, 2025 — A Hong Kong court has ruled in favor of actress Ella Koon’s aunts, invalidating a will that left the late grandmother’s HK$38 million estate to a close associate of Koon’s mother. The High Court found undue influence and cognitive impairment at play when the will was created.

Koon’s grandmother, Lo Siu-fung, passed away in 2014. A will drawn up in 2013 left her entire estate to Fung Ming-ip, a close associate of Koon’s mother, Mak Ngun-lai. The will sought to bypass Lo’s four daughters and exclude them from inheriting.

Lo’s other daughters, led by Mak Ngun-lai’s siblings, challenged the will. They claimed that Koon’s mother and Fung had exerted undue influence over Lo, who was suffering from mental health issues and mild cognitive impairment at the time.

Findings of the Court:

🔑 Judges revealed Koon’s mother had deliberately hidden Lo’s death from her sisters to avoid a challenge to the estate.

🔑 Medical records showed Lo suffered from depression and mild cognitive impairment, contradicting Fung’s claims that Lo was of sound mind when the will was made.

🔑 Suspicious transactions involving Lo’s assets caught the judge’s attention, including deposits into accounts controlled by Koon’s family and a joint property purchase with Koon’s brother, financed with loans secured against Lo’s assets.

🔑 The court labeled Fung as a ‘loyal accomplice’ to Koon’s mother and declared the will created under undue influence.

The court has ordered both Koon’s mother and Fung to bear the legal costs of the plaintiffs.mak
