According to Bloomberg, in the first communication meeting for all staff since the official acquisition of Twitter, Elon Musk announced that all employees must work 40 hours a week in the office, except for exceptions approved by him. At the same time, he said employees need to prepare for “difficult times ahead” for an advertising-driven platform like Twitter. But after the overhaul, Musk hopes to see subscription fees account for half of the company’s revenue.

Twitter, one of the tech companies that has embraced remote work the most during the pandemic, has even instituted regular extra days off for its employees. Now that these policies have been removed by Musk, he believes Twitter needs to be “nervous” to bring about change. In fact, two of Musk’s other well-known companies, Tesla and SpaceX, also require employees to work in the office, and he even issued an internal ultimatum for this.
