Elon Musk, the billionaire and special government employee, made an appearance alongside President Trump in the Oval Office on friday. This visit, possibly his last in this role, was marked by a noticeable black eye, which Musk jokingly attributed to a punch from his young son.
Musk’s tenure in Washington has reportedly been challenging.Sources told reuters that the Tesla CEO has felt “exhausted and exasperated” by the criticism directed at his companies. Ther were even reports that Tesla’s board considered finding a replacement CEO, though directors denied those claims. Despite these challenges,Musk attempted to portray his time in Washington as a success.
Even though his time as a special government employee was limited to 130 days, Musk insisted that the work of DOGE (Deliver Outstanding government Efficiencies) would continue. He emphasized that this was not the end but rather the beginning for DOGE, predicting its influence would only grow stronger.
“This is not the end of DOGE,but really the beginning,” Musk said.
Musk asserted that DOGE would eventually achieve its goal of $1 trillion in funding cuts. He stated that the group has already slashed $160 billion. Though, experts suggest the actual savings are considerably lower. Moreover, some reports indicate that DOGE’s actions, including firings, rehirings, and paid administrative leave, may have cost the government as much as $135 billion due to lost productivity, according to the Partnership for Public Service.
President Trump thanked Musk for his service and presented him with a golden key bearing the White House insignia. Trump also defended Musk against his critics, calling him an “astonishing patriot” who provided ”incredible service.”
What’s next
While Musk’s official role in Washington may be ending, he plans to continue advocating for government efficiency and innovation through his various ventures.
