Elton John: Legalizing Marijuana ‘One of the Greatest Mistakes’
Music icon Elton John, named time magazine’s 2024 Icon of the Year, has sparked controversy with his strong stance against the legalization of marijuana in the U.S. and Canada.
In a candid interview with Time, John, known for his flamboyant stage presence and powerful ballads, didn’t mince words. “I maintain that it’s addictive. It leads to other drugs,” he declared. “And when you’re stoned — and I’ve been stoned — you don’t think normally. Legalizing marijuana in America and Canada is one of the greatest mistakes of all time.”
John’s outspoken views stem from his own personal battles with drug addiction. He first encountered cocaine in the mid-1970s and has since dedicated himself to sobriety, even helping other artists overcome their own struggles.
“You make terrible decisions on drugs,” he admitted.”I wanted love so badly, I’d just take hostages. I’d see someone I liked and spend three or four months together, and then they would resent me as they had nothing in their life apart from me. It really upsets me, thinking back on how many people I probably hurt.”
John’s commitment to sobriety has led him to mentor fellow musicians, including Eminem, whom he sponsored, and Robbie Williams, whom he sent to rehab. However, he was unable to help his friend, the late George Michael.
“It’s tough to tell someone that they’re being an asshole, and it’s tough to hear,” John reflected. “Eventually I made the choice to admit that I’m being an asshole.”
John’s comments are sure to ignite debate about the legalization of marijuana, a topic that continues to divide public opinion in the United States.
