Overview
In 2025, the District health Secretariat of Bogotá, Colombia, in collaboration with other district entities, initiated an Accompaniment Plan to provide healthcare and support to the Emberá indigenous community residing in the National Park, La Rioja and La Florida areas. this plan addresses critical health needs and aims to improve the well-being of the community, especially children.
Background: The emberá Community in Bogotá
The presence of the Emberá indigenous community in Bogotá’s national Park areas represents a complex socio-environmental situation.Driven by factors such as displacement due to armed conflict and limited economic opportunities in their customary territories, members of the Emberá community have migrated to urban centers like Bogotá.This transition often leads to challenges in accessing basic services, including healthcare. The Emberá people are one of the largest indigenous groups in Colombia, with a rich cultural heritage and a deep connection to the land. Their traditional territories are primarily located in the Pacific region of Colombia.
Accompaniment Plan Details
As of July 22, 2025, the Accompaniment Plan had already provided more than 2,208 individual and collective health interventions according to a report by Caracol Radio. These interventions encompass a wide range of services:
- General Medical Valuations
- Vaccination for children, adults, and pregnant women
- psychological care
- Rapid tests for pregnancy, hepatitis, syphilis, and HIV
- Ancestral medicine practices
- Patient transfers for specialized care
The plan also addresses a recent disruption in services. On July 22,2025,leaders of the Emberá community temporarily blocked access to healthcare for approximately 240 children, protesting perceived inadequacies in the provision of services. The Bogotá City Hall reported this blockade, highlighting the need for ongoing dialog and collaboration to ensure effective service delivery as reported by Caracol Radio.
