Embracing Broken Builds: Why Diablo IV General Manager Rod Fergusson Encourages Overpowered Play

We’ve seen a lot of broken builds in Diablo IV since the game’s release, but according to franchise general manager Rod Fergusson, this isn’t a problem. According to Ferguson, our best moments in gaming occur when we feel most destroyed.
In a recent interview with Electronic Playground Network, Fergusson explained more about what he meant. “Sometimes you focus on balance rather than fun,” start. “For example, you can say ‘everything has to be on the same level’ and you’re really trying to be honest, but the problem with the Diablo game is when you feel like you’re cheating, or you feel like you’re messing around by exploiting some loophole. Those overwhelming moments as a development team, they seem like really, really fun. That’s what we’re trying to embrace, and now in season 2, Ball-Lightning Sorc’s [構建] it was ridiculous, but we said, “Let them have fun, we’ll deal with it later.”

So, Fergusson isn’t saying that your broken build will last forever, more of an “enjoy it while you can” deal, really. As time goes on, we’ll see new patches, buffs, and nerfs that will give us super powerful new builds to play with. But for now, don’t feel guilty about creating that ball lightning wizard.
