Emerald Fennell’s upcoming film adaptation of Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel, Wuthering Heights, has been generating controversy since its announcement, extending beyond typical adaptation debates to focus on casting choices and the film’s overall aesthetic direction. The film, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, is slated for release on February 13, 2026.

Fennell, known for her provocative style in films like Saltburn (2023), appears to be taking a decidedly modern and sensual approach to the classic Gothic romance. The trailer, released in November, featured imagery described as “sweaty bare chests, heaving bosoms and kinky imagery” set to music by Charli XCX, sparking immediate backlash from some viewers.

The casting of Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Elordi as Heathcliff has been a central point of contention. Critics have questioned the age appropriateness of Robbie, who is 35 years old, to portray a character who is 18 in the novel. Concerns have been raised about the potential “whitewashing” of Heathcliff, a character described in the book as having dark skin and potentially Romani heritage, by casting Elordi.

Fennell has defended her choices, stating she aimed to capture the “primal, sexual” core of the novel, and that her adaptation is driven by an emotional response to the source material. She described being “driven mad by this book” and viewing the adaptation as a deeply personal experience. According to Fennell, there is “an enormous amount of sado-masochism” within the text.

However, the casting decisions appear to be rooted in a close working relationship between Fennell and Robbie, who runs the production company LuckyChap Entertainment alongside her husband, Tom Ackerley, and two friends. LuckyChap also produced Fennell’s previous films, Saltburn and Promising Young Woman. Robbie reportedly actively lobbied Fennell for the role of Catherine, returning to work just five months after giving birth. The production relocated to the UK to accommodate Robbie and Ackerley.

Elordi’s casting also raises questions about the audition process. He previously starred in Fennell’s Saltburn, leading to accusations of bias and a lack of opportunity for other actors. Sources suggest that the casting decisions were made informally, with some describing the process as a “stitch-up.”

The situation has prompted criticism from within the acting world, with some expressing concern that the roles were pre-determined within a “private members’ club” of collaborators. One insider questioned why British talent wasn’t given more consideration, stating, “What about all of the brilliant talent in the UK? There are so many young stars who could have been chosen but, instead, it has all stayed in-house.”

Beyond the casting, Robbie’s portrayal of Catherine has also drawn scrutiny. Critics have noted her decision not to adopt a Yorkshire accent, instead speaking with a “Home Counties” accent, a choice some find jarring given the novel’s setting. This has drawn comparisons to Anne Hathaway’s widely criticized attempt at a Yorkshire accent in the 2011 film One Day.

While Elordi reportedly does attempt a Yorkshire accent, the primary concern surrounding his casting remains his appearance. Critics argue that his conventionally handsome features contrast with the novel’s depiction of Heathcliff as a darker, more rugged figure. Sources indicate that Fennell “found her Heathcliff” on the set of Saltburn and was resolute in her decision to cast Elordi.

Fennell and her team reportedly do not believe they have made any missteps, asserting their right to interpret the novel freely. The director’s background – educated at Marlborough College and with a career spanning acting (including a role in Anna Karenina and portraying Camilla Parker Bowles in The Crown) and writing (including work on Killing Eve) – suggests a willingness to challenge conventions.

The off-screen chemistry between Robbie and Elordi has also been a focus of attention. Elordi described a “mutual obsession” with Robbie during filming, stating he intentionally maintained a distance of at least ten meters from her to observe her mannerisms. Robbie reciprocated, describing herself as “co-dependent” with her co-stars and devastated when a project ends.

Robbie’s commitment to promoting the film has been extensive, including a striking appearance at the London premiere in a sheer Dilara Findikoglu gown adorned with a bracelet woven from Emily Brontë’s hair, sourced from the Bronte Parsonage Museum. Elordi complemented her with a green suit featuring a frock coat.

Fennell appears to be embracing the controversy, viewing it as a means of generating attention for her adaptation. As one observer noted, “She just loves to be talked about. Margot and Jacob have made sure of that.”
