Irish Troops Return Home from Lebanon

More than 200 Irish soldiers from the 124th Infantry Battalion returned to Ireland from Lebanon on Monday. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) landed at Dublin Airport after a six-month mission. Families, including many children, welcomed them with flags, balloons, and posters.

The soldiers had been stationed in the IRISHPOLBATT Area of Operations amid ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. They often sought shelter in bunkers due to nearby shelling. A Unifil outpost was damaged last month during clashes on the Israel-Lebanon border. Communication was difficult because WiFi went down months ago, causing families to worry without regular contact.

A Family’s Wait

Sarah McCabe eagerly awaited her husband, Sean Pol. She shared the challenges of parenting alone for six months and described the experience as feeling like “Christmas Eve.” Sean has served in the Irish Defence Forces for 18 years, and the ongoing unrest heightened anxiety for families. Sarah felt compelled to follow the news closely, overwhelmed by concern.

Reunions and Emotions

Sarah McGeeney awaited her brother Sean, noting the longer wait made it harder this time. She mentioned the difficulty of maintaining contact while Sean was deployed. He experienced cabin fever but kept morale high among fellow soldiers.

Mary and John Fleming celebrated the return of their sons, Darren and Evan, feeling overwhelmed with joy and relief. John expressed a deep desire for peace, hoping for a calmer future.

Jamie Kilmurry joyfully held his daughter upon his return, saying it felt “unbelievable” to be home. He aimed to relax after his second deployment, noting the changes in the region and the positive morale among the troops.

Pte Ashling Keogh, returning from her first tour, felt overwhelmed and excited. She looked forward to seeing her dog after the long deployment.

The homecoming brought tears and cheers as loved ones reunited, showcasing the strong bonds and sacrifices of service members and their families.
