End of an Era: Peru’s Controversial Ex-President Alberto Fujimori Passes Away at 86
Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori Passes Away
Alberto Fujimori, the former president of Peru, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, at his daughter Keiko’s residence in the San Borja area. His death comes months after regaining his freedom. Fujimori, who ruled Peru from 1990 to 2000, had been battling various medical complications since his imprisonment in 2007.
Fujimori’s presidency was marred by allegations of corruption, human rights violations, and crimes against humanity. His regime was responsible for several high-profile cases, including La Cantuta, Barrios Altos, and Pativilca. Despite his controversial legacy, Fujimori was granted a humanitarian pardon during the government of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. However, he was later returned to prison due to alleged irregularities in the pardon process.
The Constitutional Court ultimately released Fujimori in late 2023. His death has sparked a renewed debate about his legacy and the impact of his presidency on Peru. Many have criticized Fujimori for his human rights record, with some accusing him of failing to acknowledge or apologize for his regime’s atrocities.
Congresswoman Sigrid Bazán was among those who spoke out against Fujimori’s legacy, stating, “La Cantuta, Barrios Altos, Pativilca, and other crimes are not forgotten.” Others have pointed to Keiko Fujimori’s influence in securing her father’s release from prison.
