Sophie Ecclestone Returns to England Squad Amid Pressure
Updated June 28, 2025
Sophie Ecclestone’s return to the England squad has become a major talking point. The world’s No. 1 ODI bowler and fourth-ranked in T20s is back in the England fold for the first time since the Ashes. This comes after a period of absence marked by injury and off-field incidents.
Earlier, Ecclestone made headlines in Australia after declining a TV interview with former teammate Alex Hartley, now a pundit, who had criticized the team’s fitness following the T20 World Cup. Subsequently, she was initially left out of coach Edwards’ squads for the West Indies series, also missing the start of Lancashire’s season due to a knee injury. While England cited a lack of game time and recovery from the injury as reasons, Ecclestone played for her county on the same day the squad was announced.
Ecclestone, a key player in England’s cricket role, took a break from county cricket earlier this month to focus on her wellbeing and manage a quad issue. Despite England’s recent struggles, Ecclestone’s bowling numbers remain strong. In 2024, she claimed 24 T20 wickets with an average of 14.87 and an economy rate of 5.59. she also secured 13 ODI wickets at an average of 7.23.
Though, with fellow left-arm spinner Smith’s standout performance against the West indies, including a five-wicket haul on her ODI debut, and edwards’ emphasis that no player’s spot is guaranteed, Ecclestone faces unprecedented pressure to perform and solidify her role in the team.
Edwards addressed the situation after the final ODI against the West Indies, stating, “This is the best preparation for Sophie, to be ready for India.” She added, “She has been playing, she has performed really well, including winning the T20 Cup with Lancashire, so I’m happy with how she is tracking.”
What’s next
Ecclestone’s performance in the upcoming series against india will be closely watched as she aims to reaffirm her position as a leading bowler and contribute to England’s success.
