Updated May 28, 2025
Harry Brook is set to captain England in the first one-day international against the West Indies. The match, a day-night affair, sees England, ranked eighth, host the ninth-placed West Indies. Both teams are vying for crucial points to improve their standing in the ODI rankings, with an eye on the 2027 world Cup qualification.
The England cricket team is looking for a fresh start after a disappointing run that led to Jos Buttler stepping down as captain. Brook expressed his vision for the team, emphasizing energy, competitiveness, and an aggressive approach to put opposition bowlers under pressure. He cited Ben Stokes as a leadership influence.
England’s new lineup features Jamie smith opening alongside Ben Duckett. Coach Brendon McCullum believes Smith has the potential to dominate the power-play overs. jacob Bethell, returning from the Indian Premier League (IPL), will also play a key role as a spin-bowling all-rounder.
West Indies, meanwhile, are without Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd, who are staying in India to complete their IPL commitments. West Indies captain Shai Hope acknowledged Bethell’s talent, recalling their early encounters in Barbados.”Seeing what he’s done over the last couple of months, internationally, franchise cricket as well, he’s certainly a formidable talent,” Hope said.
We are going to bring a lot of energy, competitiveness and fun out there. We want to try and put opposition bowlers under pressure from their best balls. I feel when I’m batting my best, I do that quite frequently enough.
What’s next
England hopes this series marks a turning point as they aim to solidify their position in the world cricket landscape and secure a spot in the 2027 World Cup. The team is focused on building momentum and establishing a winning culture under Brook’s leadership.
