(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Dongchan Kim = Coach Wayne Rooney (37, England), who could not prevent the team’s relegation from the third division, has resigned from the baton of English professional football Derby County.

Derby County announced on the club’s website on the 25th (Korean time) that “Looney has expressed his intention to resign.”

Former England national football striker, Rooney joined Derby County as a playing coach in January 2020.

However, in the 2021-2022 season, in the League Championship, the second division of English professional football, they finished 23rd out of 24 teams and were relegated to the 3rd division.

Derby County won 55 points with a record of 14 wins, 13 draws and 19 losses in the 2021-2022 season, but was relegated due to a point deduction ban.

As the club went into bankruptcy due to financial difficulties, 12 points were cut in September last year.

It was a performance that would have been sufficient to remain in the second division without the penalty of a point reduction.

Rooney also seemed to regret this, said through the club’s website, “We need a new owner who can breathe new life into the team. For those interested in the Derby County acquisition, this team has a great history and fans. “I want to let people know that we are a club,” he said.
