EPB Emergency Braking Function: A Last Resort When Brakes Fail

Pay attention to the EPB emergency braking function. Helps in case of brake failure. The Korean Transport Safety Authority proves its effectiveness in practice.

Last resort when brakes fail

According to the latest data from the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, the emergency braking function of the electronic parking brake (EPB) is known to be the most effective in emergency situations where the brakes do not work while driving.

The EPB emergency braking function is applied to both domestic and imported cars, and the deceleration effect was also excellent. If so, let’s take a closer look at how to use the feature from the driver’s perspective and how effective it is.

It also helps at 100 km/h and on the highway

To confirm this, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority conducted tests on 13 models (including gasoline, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles).

The study was conducted by testing whether the vehicle could be stopped simply by operating the EPB button without applying the brake pedal when the vehicle reached 100 km/h. Specifically, we conducted four experiments, creating the following situations by pressing the accelerator pedal hard.
□ Press the brake pedal firmly with both feet.
□ EPB operation
□ EPB operation after being placed in neutral
□ Turn off the engine and operate the EPB

Result of the experiment,
□ Been arrested
: No movement
□ Acceleration during EPB operation
: No movement
□ Assuming rapid acceleration, EPB while driving
: Gradually slow down and stop
□ EPB after being placed in neutral
:: Gradually slow down and stop

Why is forced arrest possible with the EPB?

The reason you can force a stop using the EPB is because it replaces the mechanical parking brake. Until a few years ago it was often left as an option. However, nowadays it can easily be found in cars, even standard ones.

How to use it is simple. If you continue to press the button while driving, the speed will gradually decrease. (Modes of operation may vary depending on the manufacturer) However, since this is an action that puts a lot of strain on the car, it is better to have the vehicle inspected after avoiding the crisis.

EPB emergency braking, use it in situations like this

The Korea Transportation Safety Authority said this feature is a great help in case of sudden acceleration, mechanical defects in the accelerator pedal, or accelerator pedal blocked by a floor mat or external object.

For reference, the manufacturer clearly specifies how to use the EPB emergency braking function in the vehicle manual. Therefore, if you buy a new car, be sure to read the manual first.
