Orlando, Fla. — Universal’s Epic Universe is poised to redefine the theme park experience in Orlando. Opening Thursday, the new park represents a significant investment by Comcast, aiming to establish Universal Studios Orlando Resort as a extensive destination, not just a stopover.
Karen Irwin, president of Universal Orlando Resort, emphasized the transformative nature of this expansion. “This fourth gate changes everything,” Irwin said. “It not only cements us as more than a full-week destination vacation, but it also adds three hotels to the resort.”
While economic uncertainty looms with fluctuating tariffs and recession concerns, Jason Armstrong, chief financial officer at comcast, acknowledged potential impacts. Armstrong noted that while consumer uncertainty can affect park attendance, the parks tend to recover quickly. Bookings, though, show no signs of pressure, he added.
Despite economic headwinds, Epic Universe is projected to attract millions, boosting revenue for both Universal and Disney, while injecting billions into the local economy. The new theme park marks the beginning of a new era for Universal’s theme park progress.
The development of epic Universe, spanning 750 acres, took nearly a decade, facing construction delays. CEO Brian Roberts said the park represents Comcast’s largest single investment in its theme parks and in Florida overall. The park will feature five themed worlds: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, Super Nintendo World, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, celestial Park and Dark Universe.
Comcast’s investment in Epic Universe is part of a broader strategy to expand its theme park and experiences division. Plans are underway to open a Hollywood Horror Nights experience in Las Vegas, a kid-friendly park in Frisco, Texas, and a U.K.-based park in 2031.
Craig Moffett, co-founder and senior analyst at MoffettNathanson, noted the strategic importance of theme parks for Comcast. “Comcast is leaning into the theme park segment for a simple reason: It’s working,” moffett said.”Growth is good and returns on investment are attractive.”
Universal’s expansion occurs as Disney commits $60 billion to enhance its amusement locations. This competition drives innovation and the creation of compelling attractions.
Moffett highlighted the technological advancements integrated into Epic Universe. “This is the first new theme park in Orlando in a quarter century, and those 25 years have seen breathtaking technological advances,” Moffett said.
Universal has secured 161 patents for innovations at epic Universe, including ride designs and robotics. the park incorporates trackless ride systems, augmented reality, and high-resolution projections. The Universal destinations and Experience division holds 3,300 patents globally.
Innovations are evident in rides like Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment and Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry. The “Untrainable Dragon” show features an animatronic Toothless with a 27-foot wingspan.

What’s next
