Epstein Files Detail Connections to Russian Intelligence, Pursuit of Putin Ties

Jeffrey Epstein leveraged a former Russian official with ties to Moscow’s Federal Security Service (FSB) to gather intelligence on a woman he believed was attempting to extort associates, according to documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice. The exchange highlights Epstein’s persistent efforts to cultivate relationships within the Russian government and intelligence apparatus.

In July 2015, Epstein contacted Sergei Belyakov, a former deputy minister of economic development, seeking assistance with what he described as a blackmail attempt targeting “powerful” New York businessmen. “I need a favor,” Epstein wrote in an email, characterizing the situation as detrimental to all involved. He requested Belyakov’s “suggestions” on how to address the issue.

Belyakov, a graduate of the FSB Academy – Moscow’s training ground for intelligence personnel – responded that he needed time to “get information about her” and planned to meet with someone who knew the woman the following day. Several days later, Belyakov provided Epstein with a roughly 100-word profile of the woman, detailing her background and what he described as her involvement in the “sex and escort” business. He asserted she had “no patronage” and suggested that preventing her entry into the U.S. Could threaten her operations.

The correspondence reveals a reciprocal relationship, with Belyakov also seeking Epstein’s assistance in gaining access to prominent American figures. Following a meeting in May 2014, Belyakov told Epstein he lacked connections to individuals who could offer “new horizons and prospects,” expressing eagerness for future interactions.

In July 2015, Belyakov requested Epstein’s help in arranging meetings with venture capitalist Peter Thiel and businessman Thomas Pritzker. Thiel responded positively to Epstein’s introduction, writing, “Sergey – let me know when you are in SF and it would be good to find a time to meet.” Belyakov later informed Epstein that both Thiel and Pritzker had shared their perspectives on the Russian economy, describing the meetings as “very helpful.” He expressed a desire to host them again in Moscow.

In 2016, Belyakov sought Epstein’s feedback on business proposals intended for U.S. Business leaders. Epstein advised Belyakov to enlist a skilled English-speaking editor before presenting the proposals, suggesting “pretty women” could fulfill the role.

Attempts by Al Jazeera to reach Belyakov through the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and Ozon, where he previously served as managing director, were unsuccessful. Thiel’s foundation and Pritzker did not respond to requests for comment, while Pritzker declined to comment through a spokesperson.

The Epstein files also demonstrate Epstein’s direct attempts to connect with high-ranking Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. While there is no indication these efforts were successful, Epstein wrote in a June 2018 email to former Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjorn Jagland, “I think you might suggest to putin, that lavrov, can get insight on talking to me.” Jagland, currently under investigation in Norway regarding dealings with Epstein, reportedly agreed to raise the suggestion with Lavrov’s assistant.

Epstein’s death in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges has fueled speculation about potential ties to intelligence agencies. He maintained close relationships with figures like former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Yoni Koren, a former Israeli military intelligence officer who spent considerable time at Epstein’s residences while receiving cancer treatment.

The latest release of Epstein files, containing over six million pages of documents, images, and videos, continues to shed light on the financier’s extensive network and alleged activities. As of February 2026, no individuals beyond Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Jean-Luc Brunel have been criminally charged in connection with the revelations contained within the files. The files mention Russia 5,876 times and Vladimir Putin 1,055 times, according to reporting by The Kyiv Independent.
