Eric Dane Discusses ALS Diagnosis, Sobriety and Depression

Actor Eric Dane, known for his roles in Gray’s anatomy and Euphoria, recently shared that he has been diagnosed with ALS. The announcement comes after years of Dane being open about his struggles with sobriety and depression.
Dane, 52, revealed his ALS diagnosis in April. He expressed gratitude for his family’s support as he faces this new chapter. he also noted his intention to continue working, including filming the upcoming season of Euphoria.
The actor has two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, with his wife, Rebecca Gayheart. In the past, Dane has sought treatment for prescription drug addiction and depression, adding to the challenges he has faced.
In June, Dane spoke with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America about his ALS diagnosis. “I wake up every day and I’m immediately reminded that this is happening. It’s not a dream,” Dane saeid, emphasizing the reality of his condition.
Despite the diagnosis, Dane remains optimistic. “I don’t think this is the end of my story. I don’t feel like this is the end of me,” he stated.
dane also discussed his career plans in an interview with Variety, mentioning his involvement in multiple projects. “I am ready and willing to do just about anything, but I have limitations that I understand will preclude me from playing certain roles. Reflecting on his past struggles with sobriety, Dane admitted in a 2024 interview on the “Armchair Expert” podcast that his time on Grey’s Anatomy was marred by addiction. “If you take the whole eight years I was on Grey’s Anatomy, I was f* up longer than I was sober and that was when things started going sideways for me,” he said.
Dane also addressed his departure from Grey’s Anatomy, suggesting it was not entirely his decision. “I didn’t leave so much as I think I was let go,” he revealed,acknowledging his struggles at the time.
In 2017, production on dane’s TNT drama, The Last Ship, was temporarily halted while he addressed his depression.His representative confirmed that Dane “suffers from depression and has asked for a few weeks of downtime.”
Dane spoke about his mental health on the Today show that same year. “I took some time off — I was dealing with some depression, which was kind of odd to me,” he said. “I felt very conflicted about it as I didn’t really feel like I had anything to be depressed about.”
He encouraged others to “listen to your body,” emphasizing the seriousness of mental health. “It’s a very serious thing,” Dane stated.
