Jakarta – PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir revealed he anticipated Indonesia’s FIFA ranking to slip following the team’s defeat against Vietnam in the 2024 AFF Championship.
“It’s alright, we had already predicted a ranking drop when we fielded a young squad for the AFF. We aimed to win against Myanmar,which we did. We aimed for a win against Laos, which resulted in a draw. Against Vietnam, we had already predicted a loss,” Thohir stated in Jakarta on Thursday.
“The final match against the Philippines is crucial; we must win. So, the target of a ranking decline was something we had already factored in because our team was facing senior squads from many nations,” he added.
Indonesia indeed dropped two spots in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday, landing at 127th globally. This decline follows a draw against Laos adn a loss to Vietnam in the AFF tournament.
The Garuda lost 1.7 points in the latest rankings, bringing their total to 1133.41. Gambia and India overtook Indonesia, climbing one position each.
Thohir acknowledged the defeat against Vietnam, attributing it to the team’s reliance on young players.However, he remains hopeful that Indonesia can secure a victory against the Philippines to advance to the AFF semifinals.
“Facing Vietnam with this squad resulted in this outcome. But that’s the result. If possible, our target is to reach the semifinals,” Thohir said.
The crucial match against the Philippines will take place at Manahan Stadium in Solo on Saturday.Indonesia needs a win to keep their semifinal hopes alive.
Currently,Indonesia sits in second place with four points,while the Philippines occupies fourth place with three points.
Vietnam leads the group with seven points, while third-placed Myanmar also has a chance to advance with four points.
