Detective Questioned on Phone Data in Erin Patterson Trial
Updated June 02, 2025
The sixth week of Erin Patterson‘s trial has begun in Morwell, with jurors hearing further testimony regarding phone records. Detective Leading Senior Constable stephen Eppingstall, who lead the examination into the fatal lunch, is undergoing cross-examination.
Colin Mandy SC, Patterson’s defense lawyer, presented call records for a sim card ending in ”783.” Mandy pointed out that the records indicated a loss of network connection between 12:01 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. on Aug. 5, 2023. Eppingstall confirmed this detail. Mandy further stated that the sim card reconnected to the network at 1:44 a.m. on Aug. 6, 2023, which Eppingstall also verified.
Mandy argued that this example illustrates the “limitations” inherent in extracting information from call records,a key point in the Erin Patterson trial. The defense is focusing on the reliability and interpretation of digital evidence in the mushroom poisoning case.
The jury also viewed a flow chart depicting three sim cards investigated by police. Eppingstall previously testified about three phones believed to have been used by Patterson: two Samsungs and a Nokia. One of the Samsungs, referred to as phone A, was never recovered.
The chart, according to mandy, showed that one sim card was used across several mobile phones dating back to 2019. He also noted that in early 2023, Patterson’s son’s sim card was used in a phone referred to as phone B.
What’s next
The trial continues with further examination of evidence and witness testimony. The focus remains on digital records and their potential relevance to the case.
