The triple murder trial of Erin Patterson continued as details emerged about the inquiry. Patterson, 50, is accused of murder and attempted murder following a lunch in Leongatha, Victoria, on July 29, 2023. She has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Detective Leading Senior Constable Stephen Eppingstall testified that Simon Patterson,Erin’s estranged husband,handed over several mobile phones to the police on Aug. 6, 2023. These included the phones of Gail and Don Patterson, the deceased, and also his own device.Eppingstall added that Simon Patterson provided his handset to police again on Sept. 12, 2023.
The prosecution alleges that Erin Patterson intentionally poisoned her guests. Her defense maintains the poisoning was accidental.
On Wednesday, the jury heard that electronic records from a computer seized from Patterson’s home showed searches for death cap mushrooms. Jurors also saw Woolworths purchase history showing two items of sliced mushrooms bought July 23, 2023, in Leongatha.
Text messages between Patterson and her mother-in-law,Gail Patterson,discussing medical appointments,were also presented. Eppingstall testified that medical records did not confirm a needle biopsy appointment on june 28, 2023, as mentioned in the texts.He also stated that no cancer diagnosis for Patterson was found in the victorian cancer registry database.
Authorities were unable to locate a phone connected to Patterson, labeled “Phone A” by the prosecution.
