Eritrea’s President isaias ‍Afwerki,‍ who⁢ has been in power for 32 years, was once considered a reformist African leader.

Afwerki spends much of his time⁣ at his rural residence near Asmara, where he receives ⁤officials.

Power is centralized⁤ under ⁣him, and ordinary Eritreans seek his help.

The 79-year-old has never faced an election since 1991, when his‍ forces defeated Ethiopia.

In 1993, he ⁣criticized leaders‍ who overstayed their welcome and promised democracy.

President Bill Clinton praised Eritrea’s democratic start in 1995.

A new constitution was ratified in 1997, but war with Ethiopia in 1998⁤ led to postponed elections.

In 2001, officials called for reform, accusing Afwerki of autocratic rule.

that September, independent ⁣newspapers were shut down, and critical voices silenced.

Government officials known as⁢ the⁢ G-15 were arrested and have not been heard from since.
