In Seattle’s University District, a 22-year-old library science student named Cerberus keeps a small red backpack leaning against the wall of a shared student apartment, according to Der Spiegel. The bag contains a flashlight, pocketknife, emergency blanket, first-aid kit, medications, and a passport tucked away in the front pocket.

Der Spiegel reports that this go-bag is prepared for immediate departure out of the United States. Cerberus and their partner, Fin, face an environment where federal policies and state-level legislation have signaled that transgender individuals are unwelcome and, in the view of the federal government, effectively unrecognized.

Families Fleeing Across Borders

The legislative push against transgender rights by the GOP is not only affecting university students but is also driving parents to relocate their households to foreign countries. Debra Guckenheimer has already fled the United States alongside her nonbinary children, according to the reporting by Der Spiegel.
