Escalation of Conflict Between Hamas and Israel: Mortar Attack from Lebanon Raises Concerns

Escalation of Conflict between Hamas and Israel, Lebanon Gets Involved

By Hong Woori, Reporter

The ongoing war between the Palestinian armed faction Hamas and Israel has shown signs of escalating. On the 8th, a mortar attack was launched from Lebanon, which borders Israel’s northern region, into northern Israel. In response, the Israeli army immediately launched a counterattack, intensifying the situation.

According to three security sources cited by Reuters on the 8th, a projectile fired from Lebanon hit an Israeli military position at Sheba Farm, an area occupied by Israel. The sources further indicated that Israel has initiated its own offensive in Lebanese territory.

Hezbollah, a Shiite Islamic militant organization based in Lebanon, claimed responsibility for the attack on Israel, stating, “We launched rocket and shell attacks on Israel.” It is worth noting that Hezbollah had previously engaged in war against Israel in 2006 and is currently showing strong support for the ongoing Hamas offensive.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) retaliated by targeting the location in Lebanon that had conducted the mortar attack, as reported by local Israeli media outlet ‘Times of Israel’.

With Lebanon, a country bordering Israel, now becoming involved in the conflict, concerns are rising over the potential spread of the armed conflict between Israel and Hamas to the wider Middle East region.

In response, Hamas, targeting the Jewish Sabbath, launched thousands of rockets towards southern and central Israel around 6:30 am the previous day. Additionally, militants managed to infiltrate the area, taking around 50 Israeli soldiers and numerous civilians as prisoners and hostages.

According to a statement released after midnight on the 7th by a spokesman for the Hamas military organization, the number of Israelis abducted by Hamas is believed to be “many times higher” than the initial reports of dozens. The hostages are said to be scattered throughout the Gaza Strip.

Israeli health authorities and local media outlets such as the Jerusalem Post have reported that at least 300 people were killed and 1,600 injured in Israel due to the barrage of rockets launched by Hamas on the morning of the 7th.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health has also confirmed significant damage in the Gaza Strip from retaliatory airstrikes by the Israeli army, with at least 232 people dead and nearly 1,700 residents injured.
