Estonia Bolsters Artillery with Additional French CAESAR Howitzers
Tallinn is expanding its artillery capabilities with the purchase of 12 additional CAESAR self-propelled howitzers from France, bringing the total number of these systems to 24 by the end of 2026. The move comes as Estonia renews its strategic defense cooperation agreement with Paris, solidifying France’s position as a key arms supplier to the Baltic nation.
The agreement, confirmed during a meeting between Estonian and French defense ministers on February 12th, includes a 20-year support and maintenance agreement valued at up to approximately €100 million. The newly acquired howitzers are expected to be delivered later this year, according to Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur.
The CAESAR (Camion Équipé d’un Système d’Artillerie) is a French-made, wheeled 155mm self-propelled howitzer produced by KNDS Nexter. Its mobility is a key advantage, utilizing either a Renault Sherpa 5, Mercedes-Benz Unimog (both 6×6), or Tatra 815-7 (8×8) chassis. The system boasts a maximum range exceeding 40 kilometers when firing base-bleed high-explosive shells and is compatible with a wide range of NATO-standard ammunition, including specialized munitions like BONUS anti-armour rounds and Katana guided shells.
Estonia initially received 12 CAESAR Mk1 systems in January 2025, which were assigned to the newly established 3rd Self-Propelled Artillery Battalion under the command of the Estonian Division. This latest acquisition builds upon that foundation, contributing to a layered long-range fires system alongside Estonia’s existing K9 Thunder self-propelled guns and HIMARS rocket launchers.
The speed with which Estonian crews can be trained to operate the CAESAR system – reportedly within weeks – is also a significant benefit, accelerating combat readiness. The system’s design allows for rapid redeployment over long distances, covering up to 600 kilometers on a single refueling.
For France, the CAESAR howitzer has become a significant tool for strengthening international defense relationships. Beyond Estonia, the system is already in service with Ukraine and is being adopted by several other European nations, including Denmark, the Czech Republic, Belgium, and Lithuania. This expansion of CAESAR’s user base reinforces KNDS Nexter’s position in the European defense industry and extends French political and military influence on NATO’s eastern flank.
Minister Pevkur emphasized the importance of strengthening defense cooperation with Paris, highlighting France as a highly valued defense partner for Estonia. The ongoing collaboration between Estonian and French defense investment agencies was also praised during the recent ministerial meeting.
