The European Union (EU) has called for a ceasefire in Afghanistan on the 5th (local time), condemning the growing tensions over the attack by the Taliban militant group.

“The EU calls for an urgent, comprehensive and permanent ceasefire,” said Rousseff Borrell, the European Union’s high-ranking foreign policy representative, and the EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janes Lenarcic, in a joint statement.

They point out that the Taliban’s military attack goes against promises made in the Doha peace negotiations and agreements.

Earlier, the United States and the Taliban reached a historic peace agreement in Doha, Qatar, in February last year to end the 18-year armed conflict.

In the agreement, the Taliban promised to ensure that Afghanistan would not become a stage for extremist militants such as al-Qaeda to attack the United States and its allies. decided to withdraw.

U.S. troops are leaving Afghanistan one after another, including returning Bagram Air Base, a key military base, in accordance with President Joe Biden’s decision to complete the withdrawal by September 11.

Then, the Taliban gradually expanded their territory and took over half of Afghanistan’s territory, and after gaining control of the border area one after another, they are advancing to major cities. In the process, battles between government forces and Taliban militants are taking place in various places.

The EU said acts that violate international humanitarian law (IHL) principles and human rights, including the killing of civilians, continue to shake Afghanistan.

He added that responsible Taliban fighters and commanders should be held accountable.
