EU Grants Finland €50 Million for Border Surveillance

Helsinki, Finland – Finland is set to receive a €50 million boost from the European Union to enhance border surveillance along its eastern frontier with Russia. This funding, part of a larger €170 million allocation aimed at strengthening security and countering hybrid threats, comes as tensions remain high in the region.
“The additional funding granted to Finland is the result of successful readiness and consistent engagement with the European Commission,” said Prime Minister Petteri Orpo. “I have kept in close contact with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and have highlighted these immediate financing needs and also the special needs of our eastern border regions over the longer term.”
This latest grant brings Finland’s total funding from the EU Border Management and Visa Policy Instrument (BMVI) to approximately €83 million during the current funding period.
“This €50 million in additional funding is quite significant,” explained Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen. “it will be used to expand the coverage of technical surveillance, produce more timely situational awareness, and improve the mobility of patrols.”
The EU funding will specifically support upgrades to electronic surveillance equipment, improvements to telecommunications networks, deployment of mobile detection equipment, and measures to counter drone intrusions. These investments aim to bolster Finland’s ability to monitor and respond to potential security threats along its eastern border.
