EU Approves Tariffs on U.S. Goods, Targeting Key Republican States
BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union member states have voted to impose tariffs ranging from 10% to 25% on approximately 22 billion euros worth of goods imported from the United states, based on 2024 import costs. According to Politico, citing four EU diplomats, Hungary was the sole dissenting voice among the 27 nations.
EU Response to U.S. Tariffs
The european Commission stated that the EU views the existing U.S. tariffs as “unreasonable and harmful.” The commission added, “The EU prefers to find a decision on the basis of negotiations with the United States, which would be balanced and mutually beneficial.” The targeted goods span both agricultural and industrial sectors, including soybeans, meat, tobacco, iron, steel, and aluminum.
Targeting Political strongholds
Trade experts within the EU have strategically selected specific customs codes for the tariffs, reportedly aiming to maximize the economic impact on voters aligned with former President Trump, according to a document reviewed by Politico in Brussels.
Impact on Republican States
Politico estimates that the tariffs will affect up to $13.5 billion worth of goods originating from states that typically support the Republican party. Soybeans, a key export, are a primary target. The report emphasized the “economic and symbolic meaning” of soybeans for these states.
Soybean Trade Breakdown
In 2024, total soybean exports to the EU from the U.S. reached $2.4 billion. Of that amount, $2.1 billion came from states that supported Trump, while $348 million originated from states that voted for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Other Targeted Goods
Besides soybeans, the EU is also targeting other products from Republican-leaning states, including beef from Kansas, poultry from Louisiana, auto parts from Michigan, cigarettes from florida, and lumber from North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama.
