Lionesses in Transition: England’s Euro 2025 squad takes Shape

‌ ‍Updated ‌June 6, 2025

England’s women’s team is undergoing a significant conversion as it prepares for Euro 2025. Following a 2-1 defeat to Spain, Fran Kirby announced her retirement, and Millie Bright withdrew from Euro 2025 selection, citing mental and physical exhaustion. These departures mean that 218 caps of ⁢experience have exited the squad in ‌just over a week, putting coach Sarina Wiegman’s management style under scrutiny.

Wiegman addressed the media after naming her squad,⁢ defending her approach to player ⁤selection. She emphasized the importance of honesty and clarity in her conversations with players, even when delivering challenging news. “Sometimes, you have very ⁢good news ⁢and, sometimes, you don’t‌ have good news –‌ and I don’t beat around the bush with ⁢that,” Wiegman said.

The England coach has a history of making tough decisions. She famously‍ dropped ⁤captain Mandy van den Berg ⁢during‍ Euro 2017⁣ after two group matches, and her arrival in 2021 effectively ended Steph Houghton’s‍ international⁣ career. However, Wiegman is also known for giving opportunities to emerging talent. Missy Bo Kearns, of Aston ‍Villa, debuted against Spain and is now on standby for the squad. The final 23-woman squad includes 19-year-old Arsenal forward Michelle Agyemang and two uncapped goalkeepers. Lauren james, though injured, is expected to be fit for the opener against France on July 5.

Wiegman acknowledged the lack of experience in the squad but ⁢expressed confidence in the team’s ⁢leadership. “It’s not always‌ the leaders who are visible,” she said. “There are many, many leaders who⁣ lead‍ in⁤ a different way. They have a huge impact on the ⁤team, too.”

Despite criticism for selecting the relatively ⁤unproven Agyemang over Kirby, Wiegman is excited about the young player’s potential. “I think she brings something different,” Wiegman stated. “I think we ⁣are realy strong up front. What she showed ⁢when ⁢necessary is the physicality.”

“Sometimes, you have very⁣ good news and, sometimes, you don’t have good news — and I don’t beat around the bush with that. I just give that message, then I can’t always control how people respond⁢ on that.”

What’s next

As England prepares to defend its European title, Wiegman hopes her tough decisions ⁤will ‍ultimately lead to further success this summer, shifting the focus from past disappointments to future achievements.
