Europe Eyes AI Application Advantage Amid US Infrastructure Push
Amsterdam – Europe should capitalize on its strengths in application progress to take a leading role in teh artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, according to tech leaders at The Assembly, part of the TNW Conference.while the United States dominates AI infrastructure, Europe can still lead in AI applications.
Jeroen van Glabbeek, CEO and founder of CM.com, a customer engagement platform with a market capitalization of about €217 million and €274 million in 2024 revenues, spearheaded the call. He believes the U.S. advantage in AI infrastructure provides a foundation for European software innovation.
Massive investments are fueling this infrastructure. Meta, Amazon, Alphabet and Microsoft plan to spend over $300 billion combined in 2025 on data centers, networking, and cloud services for AI, according to CNBC. Van Glabbeek characterized this as “the biggest investment in technology in the history of mankind.”
European tech companies cannot compete with this level of hardware spending. Rather, they can leverage the infrastructure built in the U.S.to develop AI applications. Europe has a history of building accomplished apps, including Spotify, Grammarly and Revolut.Van Glabbeek anticipates a new wave of AI applications emerging from the continent.
“We won’t win the hyperscaler AI platform play, but there’s still something positive to compete for – and it’s on the application side,” Van Glabbeek said.
Sohrab hosseini, co-founder of amsterdam-based generative AI startup Orq.ai, emphasized opportunities at the “orchestration and application levels.” Lucien Burm, president of the Dutch Startup Association, highlighted the potential for profit in the application layer.
“The money is probably to be made in the application layer,” Burm said. “we’re not going to win that much in very deep AI hardware tech.”
To realize Europe’s AI potential, speakers called for greater risk appetite from investors, streamlined public funding, and increased local procurement. Above all, they stressed the need for innovation-friendly AI regulation.
