Germany’s decision to implement screening of incoming passengers at all borders has sent shockwaves through the European community, which values free border movement as a cornerstone of integration.

The German government announced on September 9 that it will strengthen controls at all nine land borders for six months, starting from September 16. This move will see police officers deployed at borders with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Denmark to check entry into the country and the return of unauthorized newcomers or dangerous individuals.

Germany’s decision comes amid growing calls to close the border due to a series of violent crimes committed by immigrants in recent months and the increasing threat of terrorism from Islamic extremists. Public opinion is increasingly supporting hard-line policies, with the far-right Alternative for Germany party, which has a policy stance that excludes immigrants, recently winning German state legislative elections.

The Schengen Agreement, which guarantees free passage without passport inspection or other procedures when crossing borders between ratifying countries, is being put to the test. The British Guardian has analyzed the German measures as “a major blow to free movement within Europe and a serious test of EU unity.”

As Germany strengthens its border controls, the European community is left to grapple with the implications of this decision. With 29 European countries, including Germany, having joined the Schengen Agreement, the move is seen as a significant shift in the region’s approach to border control and immigration.
