Rheinmetall‘s Ammunition Surge: Europe’s New Arsenal and what It Means for Global Security
Germany is rapidly becoming a central pillar in bolstering Western defense capabilities. Rheinmetall, the nation’s largest weapons manufacturer, has officially opened a dramatically expanded ammunition production facility in Unterlüß, Lower Saxony, with the ambition of becoming Europe’s – and potentially the world’s – largest ammunition producer. The move signals a significant shift in European defense strategy, driven by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and a broader recognition of dwindling stockpiles.
The Unterlüß plant is slated for a massive investment of approximately €500 million. Production will scale quickly: starting with around 25,000 artillery shells this year, output is projected to reach 140,000 by 2026,and a considerable 350,000 annually by 2027. This surge in capacity is directly linked to increased demand from the German military, other Western armed forces, and crucially, Ukraine, which has been heavily reliant on Western aid.
The opening ceremony was a high-profile event, attended by NATO
