European Countries Back Greenland and Denmark Amid Trump Threats

by Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor

Germany, Denmark, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United‌ Kingdom have jointly ⁣rejected threats of customs sanctions from the United States stemming from a dispute ‍over Greenland. A joint statement released by the countries characterized the threatened tariffs as undermining transatlantic relations and ⁣increasing the risk ⁤of escalation.

The nations affirmed their commitment ‌to a coordinated response and the preservation of their sovereignty. The dispute originated from President Trump’s expressed interest⁤ in possibly acquiring Greenland and his ⁢subsequent announcement of additional duties on the eight European countries, all NATO members, beginning in ‌February.

President Trump had voiced objections to a joint military reconnaissance mission conducted by these countries on Greenland. Germany has as announced the withdrawal of ‌its⁣ 15 soldiers participating in the mission.
