Delegates at the European Synodality Conference in Wels, Austria, identified baptism, active listening, and a renewed culture of leadership as central pillars for the future of the Catholic Church. According to Vatican News, the three-day gathering concluded with a proposal from conference chair Klara Csiszar to establish a permanent European Church Forum to interpret contemporary social developments through the lens of the Gospel. The symposium, titled Shaping Synodality in Europe, brought together 187 participants from 31 countries at Schloss Puchberg, an educational center near Wels. Attendees ranged from Portugal and Iceland to Ukraine, representing diverse regional challenges within the continent.

Theological Perspectives on Secularization and Migration

Keynote presentations during the event addressed the complex realities facing modern European societies. Prague theologian Tomáš Halík described the secularization of Europe as an ambivalent process that has diminished the Church’s institutional influence while simultaneously fostering freedom of conscience and severing ties between religion and political power. In addition, pastoral expert Gabriele Eder-Cakl presented examples detailing how local Churches are actively responding to migration, ecumenism, digital lifestyles, and an increasing number of young people seeking baptism.

Baptismal Dignity and Canon Law

On the third working day, Jesuit theologian Christoph Theobald emphasized the equal dignity of all baptized individuals as the core theological foundation for shared responsibility within a synodal Church. Building on that framework, canon lawyer Myriam Wijlens examined the concrete implications of baptismal dignity for decision-making structures. Csiszar highlighted these insights to construct a preliminary European roadmap derived from table-group reports. She raised a central question regarding Catholic practice, asking why baptism holds so little visible influence on daily church life if it represents the highest common dignity. Csiszar also stressed that listening requires allowing oneself to be interrupted by the actual concerns of ordinary people.

Addressing the Wounds of Europe

Discussions during the conference directly confronted what organizers termed the wounds of Europe, which include war, displacement, societal polarization, loneliness, abuse, and religious alienation. Csiszar contrasted these hardships with a widespread societal longing for peace, community, dignity, justice, and hope. Daily proceedings at the conference incorporated regular liturgies and prayers, with the final prayer led by Frère Matthew, Prior of the Taizé Community. Organizers noted that parishes will continue to serve as essential local spaces where individuals can experience community, recognition, and trust.
