Europe’s Defense Gaps: London Arms Lobby Concerns

September 8, 2025 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor World

Europe’s Defense Spending Soars, But Gaps Remain: A Call for Strategic Investment

Milan – Europe is at a crossroads. while defense spending has surged nearly 50% since 2014, a new report reveals critical gaps in key military capabilities, leaving nations heavily reliant on the United States. The findings, released by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), highlight vulnerabilities in intelligence gathering, space access, long-range strike capabilities, and missile defense.

The report arrives as Europe prepares for DSEI, one of the continent’s largest defense exhibitions, scheduled for September 9-12 in London. The event is expected to draw increased participation from European countries and companies, including those from Lithuania and the Czech Republic. However, the U.S. government and arms industry will maintain a significant presence, underscoring the current reliance on American capabilities.

Key Findings:

Intelligence Gaps: European NATO members lack sufficient intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft and geospatial capabilities.Replacing the signals and electronic intelligence platforms currently provided by the U.S. could cost up to $4.8 billion. While some nations are investing in ISR aircraft and satellite constellations, American-made systems remain the core of NATO’s capabilities.
Space Access: Europe’s limited launch capacity and reliance on France’s Ariane and Vega systems create a vulnerability. SpaceX’s Falcon 9 has conducted more launches in the first half of 2025 than the combined European Arianne and Vega launcher families as 2015.
Long-Range Strike: With the exception of France and the UK,European forces lack sufficient land- and sea-based missiles capable of reaching targets beyond 1,000 kilometers, limiting their ability to sustain high-intensity warfare.
Missile Defense: The European defense market is increasingly turning to non-NATO suppliers like Brazil,Israel, and South Korea for ground-based air and missile defense systems.
