Europe’s Defense Industry Sees 16.9% Growth Amid Ukraine War, Creates 76,000 Jobs
European Defense Industry Growth
The European defense industry grew by 16.9 percent in the past year, reaching nearly €160 billion (about $170 billion). This increase is driven by the war in Ukraine, prompting nations to raise arms spending.
Employment Rise
Employment in the defense sector rose by 8.9 percent, totaling 581,000 jobs. The Aerospace, Security, and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) shared these statistics based on data from 3,000 firms across 17 countries.
Export Growth
Exports from the European defense sector increased by 12.6 percent, totaling €57.4 billion. These exports support the competitive performance of the industry, especially given the small domestic markets and high development costs in Europe.
Sector Breakdown
- Aerospace Sector: Grew by 15.8 percent to €64.8 billion.
- Naval Sector: Increased by 17.7 percent to €37.9 billion.
- Land Sector: Also grew by 17.7 percent, reaching €56.2 billion.
Combined, these sectors generated €158.8 billion in revenue.
Employment Details
Of the 581,000 employed, 217,000 work in aeronautics. This includes 17,700 new jobs added in the previous year. The remaining jobs are spread across the land and naval sectors.
Challenges Ahead
Despite growth, the ASD highlighted significant challenges. Years of low investment and reliance on external suppliers weakened Europe’s production capacity. Critical dependencies on imported minerals and semiconductors further complicate the situation.
Investment Needs
The ASD calls for increased investment and strategies to reduce dependence on outside sources for essential manufacturing components.
Historical Context of Defense Budgets
Since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, the combined defense budget of EU member states increased by about 20 percent. In contrast, Russia and China raised their defense budgets by nearly 300 percent and 600 percent, respectively, in the same timeframe.
Combined Sector Revenue
The total revenue of the aerospace, space, and defense sectors in Europe grew by 10.1 percent, reaching €290.4 billion. This growth led to the addition of 76,000 jobs, bringing the total headcount to 1,027,000.
