European airports are warning of imminent jet fuel shortages that could disrupt summer travel if oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz do not resume within three weeks, according to a letter from Airports Council International (ACI) Europe to the EU transport commissioner.
The warning comes as oil prices have surged since early March following Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for nearly a fifth of global oil shipments, in retaliation to ongoing conflicts. ACI Europe stated that the bloc is now three weeks away from potential fuel shortages, raising concerns over flight cancellations and holiday disruptions during the peak travel season.
