As Russia’s war in Ukraine continues, Europe faces critical choices. President-elect Donald Trump’s victory may push Russia toward a quick resolution, which could legitimize its territorial gains. Russian military operations have increased, aiming to strengthen negotiations before Trump’s inauguration.

Europe desires stability, but it must reject any deal that solidifies Russia’s control. Several factors indicate that Russia might be nearing a breaking point in the next twelve to eighteen months:

  1. Economic Strain: The Russian economy suffers greatly due to war expenditures. Military salaries have surged, creating a wage gap between soldiers and civilians. This imbalance threatens economic stability, as Putin struggles to sustain the war effort.

  2. Manpower Shortages: Russia experiences severe shortages of soldiers. Estimates suggest thirty-six thousand soldiers are killed or wounded monthly. Recruitment is strained, leading Russia to consider soldiers from occupied Ukrainian territories and North Korea to fill gaps.

  3. Equipment Scarcity: Russian forces face declining stocks of heavy armored vehicles, prompting a shift to infantry tactics, which could increase casualties.

Putin’s military escalation may backfire if Western support holds firm. Europe must remain united and vigilant against potential Russian advancements.

As the U.S. shifts focus toward China, European countries may need to bolster their defense budgets and contributions to NATO. A Russian victory could weaken the EU’s ambitions for unity and strategic security, leading to increased nationalistic approaches among member states.

Moscow is aware of this risk and may employ hybrid tactics, including disinformation and destabilization, to undermine European resolve.

If the U.S. reduces support for Ukraine, Europe must resist pressure for an early settlement. Any perceived peace could allow Russia to regroup and renew its efforts to undermine Ukraine’s independence.

The current war marks a pivotal moment for Europe. The EU’s actions will define its future in the eyes of allies and adversaries. Unity and strength are essential as Europe confronts Russian aggression.

Ensuring Russia does not claim victory is paramount for Ukraine and the future of Europe. Failure to do so could jeopardize the European project.
