Malaysian authorities arrested three 16-year-old male students following the death of their 16-year-old schoolmate, Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal, whose body was discovered inside a secondary school hall in Yong Peng on Oct. 3. Bernama reported that the victim sustained injuries to her head and body, and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called for a swift probe into the incident.
Three Students Arrested Following Discovery in Yong Peng School Hall
The victim, a Form Four student at the secondary school in Yong Peng, had gone to the premises on Oct. 3 to attend tuition classes. When she did not return home by late afternoon, her grandmother and a friend went to the school to search for her. It was reported that the grandmother found the girl lying in the school hall around 5.30pm with dried blood on her body and bruising. A broken flower pot was located near the victim at the scene.

Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad stated that one of the suspects was brought to the Magistrate’s Court in Johor on the morning of Oct. 4, where a six-day remand order was granted until Oct. 9. Ab Rahaman noted that the detained youth had no previous criminal record.
Autopsy Findings and Family Mourning in Batu Pahat
An autopsy was conducted on Oct. 4 at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital in Batu Pahat. The victim, known as Fiya to her family, was remembered by her aunt, 45-year-old teacher Siti Nur Faeza Khyar, as a quiet, hardworking top student who aspired to become a public health doctor like her late mother. Siti Nur Faeza told Sinar Harian that her niece was frequently at the top of her form and was considered a bright prospect for achieving straight 9As in her upcoming Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examinations.
Classmates described Irene Sofiya as focused on her studies and active in school activities. Her classmate noted that students had initially assumed she was absent from extra classes on Oct. 3 because she felt unwell, before teachers later informed the school community that something ‘bad’ had happened.
Prime Minister and State Officials Demand Transparent Probe
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called for a swift probe on Oct. 4. He stressed that strict legal action must be taken without compromise should any criminal element be uncovered during the probe. He added, The safety and well-being of students remain a collective responsibility
and The government will not compromise in ensuring their safety and well-being are always protected.
The Johor state government directed the state Education Department and the Batu Pahat District Education Office to provide full cooperation to police investigators. State Education and Information Committee chairman Muhammad Naqib Md Ghazali issued a warning against institutional violence, stating that there would be no compromise on any form of bullying, violence or criminal acts threatening school safety.
Ongoing Police Investigation Into Yong Peng School Incident
The case is being investigated for murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad stated that the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident have yet to be established.
