Robotaxis Expand Amid Safety Concerns; tesla Admits Tech Lag
Updated May 25, 2025
Despite lingering safety concerns, robotaxis are expanding their reach across the United States. Waymo, Tesla and Amazon’s Zoox are all making moves in the autonomous vehicle market, even as a recent survey indicates that a majority of consumers desire more safety data and the ability to take control of the vehicle themselves.
Waymo, an Alphabet subsidiary, recently gained approval to broaden its robotaxi operations around the san Francisco Peninsula, including San Jose. The company already operates over 1,500 vehicles in California, Arizona, texas and Florida, providing more than 250,000 rides weekly. Waymo vehicles use pre-mapped roads, sensors, cameras, radar and lidar for navigation.
tesla plans to launch its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, in June. Tesla’s self-driving technology relies on onboard cameras and AI machine-learning models. However, Tesla’s head of Autopilot and AI Software, Ashok Elluswamy, conceded that Waymo is ahead in the technology. “Technically, Waymo is already performing,” Elluswamy said. “We are lagging by maybe a couple of years.”
Amazon’s self-driving unit, Zoox, announced it will begin testing self-driving cars in Atlanta. The fleet will consist of retrofitted SUVs with human safety operators. Zoox vehicles feature a unique seating arrangement with four individual seats facing each other, creating a lounge-like atmosphere.
Consumer confidence in robotaxi technology has been increasing, coinciding with more safety studies. However, a survey by MIT and JD Power revealed that 83% of respondents want more safety data before using robotaxis, and 86% want the option to take over the steering wheel.

“Technically, Waymo is already performing. We are lagging by maybe a couple of years,” Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla Head of Autopilot and AI Software said.
