Incident Occurs After TV Commentary
Former Turkey and Fenerbahçe striker, now TV commentator Serhat Akın, was shot in the foot, the footballer announced on his social media early on 27 September.
Akın was in a TV studio in the Beykoz area of Istanbul to comment on Fenerbahçe’s 2-1 win over Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League. He stated, “They shot me in the foot after the program, my last word is Fenerbahçe.”
Akın, 43, has been known for his harsh criticism of Fenerbahçe’s current board. Five days before the attack, he mentioned during a broadcast that he was receiving threats. “I’m not afraid of anyone. Threats don’t work. The president (Ali Koç) threatens those who cannot buy them… First they asked for support in the election. They realized they couldn’t buy me, so they hired people to take me down.”
The Beykoz Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the attack.
Fenerbahçe condemned the attack in a statement, saying, “We expect the criminals to be brought to justice as soon as possible.”
Akın has been taken to a hospital for treatment.
